Toyota has expanded a recall of its Kluger vehicles in Australia to cover nearly 50,000 cars over a potential fault affecting the second-row seats.
The recall was initially issued in March for about 34,000 Klugers manufactured between 31 March 2021 and 10 November 2023. It now includes an estimated 15,000 additional vehicles made between 11 November 2023 and 10 June 2025.
The issue involves the return spring in the second-row seat recliner assembly. Toyota said a combination of the spring’s orientation and the clearance between components could prevent the seat-back teeth from fully engaging during adjustment.
“This may lead to the seat back not remaining in a locked position and failing to properly restrain occupants, which increases the risk of injury,” the manufacturer said in its recall notice.
Toyota dealers will replace the seat-back return springs in affected vehicles free of charge. Owners of involved Klugers have been urged to contact their dealership.
The recall expansion comes during a successful year for Toyota, which was named Australia’s most popular car brand in April.
