President Donald Trump is meeting senior artificial intelligence executives at the White House on Tuesday, September 29, to discuss how the United States can preserve its lead in the technology while addressing concerns about its potential risks.
The talks are expected to include Nvidia chief executive Jensen Huang and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, with House Speaker Mike Johnson also due to take part. Executives from OpenAI, Google, Meta and Palantir are among the other technology leaders expected to attend.
The meeting comes as Washington faces growing pressure to establish safeguards for increasingly powerful AI systems. Some technology executives and researchers have urged a slower approach to development, warning that the technology could become difficult to control if it advances without adequate protections.
Trump has repeatedly argued that excessive restrictions could undermine American competitiveness and allow China to overtake the US in a strategically important industry. His administration has made maintaining American dominance in AI a central technology and economic priority.
Amodei has been among the more prominent industry figures calling for greater caution over the pace of AI development. He held a private dinner with Trump at the White House on Sunday, ahead of the broader meeting with technology executives.
Huang, whose company supplies many of the advanced chips used to develop AI systems, has also been drawn into the debate over safety and regulation. Nvidia has become one of the most influential companies in the global AI industry as demand for its processors continues to grow.
The White House discussions are intended to address the balance between encouraging innovation, protecting national security and preventing artificial intelligence from developing in ways that policymakers cannot effectively manage.
