Walmart has launched a joint membership covering its Walmart+ service and Sam’s Club Plus, offering access to both businesses for $120 a year.
The combined deal is nearly $100 cheaper than purchasing separate annual memberships, although it will not be available through monthly payments. Walmart and Sam’s Club will continue to offer their memberships separately.
Members will be able to shop at Sam’s Club warehouses, receive free delivery from both chains and choose a subscription to either Peacock or Paramount+. The package also includes fuel savings and 2% Sam’s Club Cash on eligible purchases.
Customers who already hold memberships with both retailers can link their accounts to receive the reduced price. Employees of Walmart and Sam’s Club will also receive joint memberships as part of their benefits.
John Furner, Walmart’s chief executive, said the offer was designed to combine savings with convenience as shoppers face pressure on their household budgets.
“We’re giving people a reason to expect more from their memberships,” he said. “For $120 a year, we’re raising expectations for what a membership can deliver: more money in their pockets and more time to call their own.”
Walmart expands membership offer
The move brings together Walmart’s focus on routine, everyday purchases with Sam’s Club’s warehouse model, where customers can buy goods in bulk. Walmart said the two businesses could complement each other through the combined membership.
The announcement comes as Walmart places greater emphasis on convenience and value to support sales while consumers contend with higher food and fuel prices.
Sam’s Club reported a 26% rise in e-commerce sales during Walmart’s fiscal second quarter, driven by increased transactions and membership growth. Its net sales, including fuel, reached $25.7 billion during the period.
Walmart said global membership revenue rose 17% in the quarter, while Walmart+ recorded its strongest second-quarter increase in net members. Sam’s Club membership revenue grew by 6%.
The company said costs linked to the new programme were not expected to have a material effect on its guidance for the fiscal third quarter or the full year.
