Australia have been urged to make the new ball count when play resumes against South Africa at St George’s Park, with Mark Waugh warning that the side is struggling in the absence of spinner Nathan Lyon.
Australia captain Pat Cummins turned to part-time spinners Matt Renshaw and Nic Maddinson late in the first session as South Africa continued batting in improved conditions.
Sunshine has made batting easier at the ground, while the ball has softened and the pitch has appeared increasingly flat.
“The new ball is going to be the key for Australia,” Waugh said on Kayo Sports during the lunch break. “The wicket’s flat, the ball is soft.”
