Australia’s new ball will be crucial when play resumes against South Africa at St George’s Park, with the hosts struggling to make an impact without spinner Nathan Lyon.
The sun emerged on the third day, improving the batting conditions and leaving Australia captain Pat Cummins turning to part-time spinners Matt Renshaw and Nic Maddinson late in the opening session.
Former Australia batter Mark Waugh said the softer ball and flat pitch had made it increasingly difficult for the attack to contain South Africa.
“The new ball is going to be the key for Australia,” Waugh said on Kayo Sports during the lunch break. “The wicket’s flat, the ball’s soft.”
