West Indies beat India in a record ODI run chase in Chandigarh, reaching 352 for five with 10 balls remaining to win the third match by five wickets.
Captain Shai Hope led the pursuit with an unbeaten 162, guiding his side to their highest successful one-day international chase after India had posted 351 for seven.
India had already secured the three-match series with eight-wicket victories in Thiruvananthapuram and Guwahati. The defeat was nevertheless their first against West Indies since 2023.
Shai Hope steers West Indies to record ODI chase
Hope moved up to open the batting after Jewel Andrew reportedly injured a finger while taking a catch and was taken to hospital. Having kept wicket throughout India’s 50 overs in humid conditions, Hope went on to produce his second successive century in the series.
His innings, his 21st ODI hundred and fifth against India, came from 143 balls and included 17 fours and three sixes. He reached 50 from 46 deliveries and 100 from 104 before accelerating late in the chase.
Amir Jangoo made 67 from 56 balls and shared a second-wicket stand of 109 with Hope from 99 deliveries. After Jangoo was run out in the 21st over, Sherfane Rutherford added 24 and helped maintain the momentum with a partnership worth 56.
Keemo Paul then contributed 44 from 35 balls, including five fours, in a stand of 65 with Hope. Once Paul was dismissed in the 41st over, caught off Gurnoor Brar, Hope increased the pace, taking 62 from his final 39 deliveries.
India were also penalised for a slow over rate during the final four overs, leaving an additional fielder inside the 30-yard circle. Hope and Gudakesh Motie, unbeaten on 19, added 62 from 29 balls for the sixth wicket before Hope hit the winning run.
“Felt something around the groin area but wanted to fight through till the end,” Hope said.
He added: “[Chasing is] always a lot easier in India, especially with the dew. Glad we got over the line.”
India’s innings began badly after they won the toss. Shubman Gill was caught behind for one and Virat Kohli was bowled for a golden duck, both dismissed by Jayden Seales.
Only 28 runs came in the first 10 overs, but Rohit Sharma and Rahul rebuilt the innings. Sharma struck 92 from 85 balls and shared a third-wicket partnership of 137 with Ruturaj Gaikwad, who made 57 from 69 before becoming Seales’s third victim.
Lokesh Rahul then took India beyond 350, finishing unbeaten on 129 from 87 balls. His innings contained six sixes and 10 fours, with useful partnerships alongside Naman Dhir and Brar.
The teams will next begin a five-match Twenty20 series on Tuesday, starting in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh.
