A US federal judge has blocked Donald Trump’s latest attempt to restrict birthright citizenship, ruling that the administration cannot enforce an executive order withholding citizenship documents from certain children born in the United States. District Judge Deborah L Boardman issued a preliminary injunction in Maryland on Wednesday, protecting children covered by an existing class-action case brought by immigrant families and advocacy groups. The ruling prevents the Department of State, Department of Homeland Security and Social Security Administration from interfering with, denying or failing to recognise the citizenship of children within the certified class. State and territory health ministers will press Federal Health Minister Mark Butler for more funding to tackle a sharp rise in the number of older Australians occupying hospital beds while waiting for aged care support. More than 3,000 patients who are considered medically fit for discharge are stranded in public hospitals nationwide, according to figures compiled by the states and territories. The total has increased by more than 25 per cent in just three months. The ministers are expected to argue at their meeting with Mr Butler on Friday that the shortage of residential aged care places and delays in…

Two women who went mushroom picking in a Siberian forest have been killed in separate bear attacks, with their bodies later found buried just five metres apart near the settlement of Podtyosovo in Russia’s Krasnoyarsk region. Galina Teterina, 73, and Zoya G, 67, disappeared after entering the forest on 31 August. Their remains were discovered on 2 September, around three to four kilometres from the settlement, bearing injuries consistent with an attack by a wild animal. Investigators believe the women encountered the same bear at different times. Zoya is thought to have been killed and buried first, before Galina arrived…
Abdul El-Sayed’s efforts to repair relations with Jewish Democrats in Michigan have produced a mixed response, with some saying his apologies for comments about a synagogue attack did not go far enough. The Democratic Senate nominee spent two days meeting members of the Michigan Jewish Democratic Caucus, seeking to calm tensions left by a bitter primary contest and build support for his general-election battle against Republican Mike Rogers. Mr El-Sayed apologised on Saturday at the Michigan Democratic Party’s convention in Lansing, and again on Sunday at a private fundraising event hosted by the caucus. But critics said he appeared to…

Altrata estimates that 1,673 billionaires will pass on wealth during the next ten…
Adam Thomas has recalled the moment a gun was pointed at his head on a bus when he was a teenager, saying he initially believed the weapon was fake. The Waterloo Road actor, now 38, described the ordeal during an episode of the At Home With The Thomas Bros podcast, which he presents with his brothers Ryan and Scott. Adam said he was aged about 14 or 15 and sitting at the back of a double-decker bus when a group of boys boarded. “I got a gun pulled to my head on a bus,” he said. “I was sat at…
Google has unveiled WeatherNext 3, an artificial intelligence weather model it says can deliver more accurate, detailed and frequent forecasts than both rival AI systems and established government forecasting tools. Developed by scientists at Google DeepMind and Google Research, the model is expected to feed weather information shown through Google Search, Google Maps and Gemini. It will also be made available to users and researchers through Google’s cloud platforms. WeatherNext 3 was ranked the most accurate model in tests carried out using Operational WeatherBench, a comparison platform developed by the weather technology company Brightband. The assessment examined measures including temperature,…
Stanford’s top-ranked, unbeaten women’s soccer team is to retire jersey No. 19 in honour of former captain Katie Meyer, in the first such ceremony in the programme’s history. The tribute will take place before Thursday evening’s match against USC at Stanford’s Cagan Stadium. Meyer’s parents, Steve and Gina, are due to receive a framed No. 19 jersey during the pre-match ceremony. Stanford head coach Paul Ratcliffe said Meyer had made a lasting impression as a competitor, leader and team-mate, describing the retirement as a way to preserve her legacy for future generations of players. Meyer wore No. 19 for Stanford…
