Investigators are examining claims that the Omani co-pilot accused of stabbing the captain and trying to crash a flydubai flight to Israel had undergone Islamist radicalisation. The co-pilot, who has not been named, was arrested in Saudi Arabia after off-duty pilots took control of Flight FZ1073 and landed it at Tabuk. Passengers had stormed the cockpit and subdued him, averting what officials said could have been a disaster involving 174 passengers and crew. Benjamin Netanyahu said personal material found during the investigation pointed to “Islamist radical indoctrination”. Israeli officials have also alleged that the co-pilot had discussed killing Jews on…
Brendan Harris, the last of the teenagers jailed over the murder of Sophie Lancaster, has been cleared for release on licence despite denying that he personally attacked her. Harris, now 35, was convicted of murder after Sophie, 20, was beaten in Stubbylee Park, Bacup, in 2007. He has maintained that he attacked her boyfriend, Robert Maltby, but did not strike Sophie when she came to his aid. A Parole Board decision said Harris accepted he had taken part in a “group attack” and was therefore responsible, along with others, for Sophie’s death. It also noted that he accepted attacking Mr…

Police and firefighters were sent to Blueface’s Los Angeles-area home twice after emergency calls were made in what authorities determined were swatting incidents. Los Angeles County Sheriff’s deputies attended the property after the first call, but nobody was at home. The call was made at about 1.30pm the previous day. A second response followed at around 3.42pm, when deputies and the Los Angeles County Fire Department arrived at the residence and spoke with Blueface. They established that there was no medical emergency. The caller had reported that someone at the house was suffering a seizure. During the first incident, the…
Christa Pike is in critical condition after surviving an attempted lethal injection in Tennessee, where officials administered two doses of pentobarbital before taking her to hospital. The 50-year-old had been due to die at Riverbend Maximum Security Institution in Nashville on Wednesday for the 1995 murder of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer. The procedure was halted after Pike remained alive, prompting Governor Bill Lee to suspend Tennessee’s remaining scheduled execution this year. Pike’s lawyer, Randy Spivey, said on Thursday that she was receiving “lifesaving care” but that her legal team had not been given a detailed update on her prognosis. “Christa is…

Transcripts from Cornell University’s Title IX investigation into an alleged gang rape at a fraternity provide new details of Jane Doe’s account, as well as statements from six of the seven men named in her civil lawsuit and 20 witnesses. The records, distributed to the parties in January 2025, cover an alleged incident at the university’s Chi Phi house in October 2024. They do not include the Title IX panel’s hearing minutes, reasoning or final findings. One roommate recalled Doe laughing the following morning as she said: “Oh my goodness, isn’t that crazy?” The roommate said Doe appeared to be…
A gravitational tug between Earth’s solid inner core and its rocky mantle may be altering the length of our days by a few milliseconds, researchers at the University of Alberta have found. The imperceptible changes in Earth’s rotation are too small for people to feel, but are significant for GPS navigation and global timekeeping, which rely on precise measurements of the planet’s movement. Physicists Huifeng Zhang and Mathieu Dumberry examined records from 1964 to 2019 to investigate what drives the fluctuations. Their study was published in Nature on September 23. How the inner core affects Earth’s rotation Earth’s inner core…
