Perth home buyers are increasingly prioritising space, storage and the potential for extra accommodation over beachfront views, with pools, granny flats, land and workshops among the most popular searches this year. The shift was identified in Domain’s Spring Homebuyer Report, which found buyers were looking for ways to gain more value and flexibility from their properties amid strong price growth across the Perth market. Alice Stolz, Domain’s national property editor, said space had become “the ultimate luxury” for many buyers. “What we’re seeing is that basically most Perth buyers are looking for space,” she said. “It’s not just pools. Basically,…
Millions have lost SNAP benefits since a sweeping US law introduced stricter work requirements, leaving recipients facing higher food costs and uncertainty over how they will manage, anti-hunger groups have warned. About 5.2 million Americans have lost assistance since the One Big Beautiful Bill Act was enacted, according to an analysis by the Food Research & Action Center (FRAC). Enrolment in the food-stamp programme is now at its lowest level since 2019. The law, signed by President Donald Trump on 4 July 2025, requires most recipients aged between 18 and 64 to work or volunteer for at least 80 hours…
Three teenagers killed after a car plunged into the River Wear in Sunderland have been named as Jackson Duke, 17, Luke Etheridge, 16, and Zara Shaw, 16. The black Audi A3 broke through a barrier at Panns Bank, near Wearmouth Bridge, at about 1.30pm on Tuesday. Four teenagers were believed to have been inside the vehicle, with a 17-year-old passenger escaping from the water. The surviving teenager has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving. Police said no other vehicle was believed to have been involved. Chief Superintendent Scott Cowie, the area commander for Sunderland, said the…
The US economy grew at an annual rate of 2.2% between April and June, an unexpectedly strong revision driven by consumer spending and business investment, the Commerce Department reported on Wednesday. The updated gross domestic product figure was higher than the department’s earlier estimate of 1.5%, although growth slowed from 2.5% in the first three months of the year. Economists had expected little or no change to the initial second-quarter estimate. Consumer spending, which accounts for about 70% of US economic activity, rose at a 3.8% annual rate. That was a marked improvement on the 0.7% pace recorded in the…
A Florida teen was seriously injured after a TikTok haircut stunt in the median of a busy Ocala road ended with him being hit by a pickup truck, police said. Three young men, aged 18, 19 and 20, had placed a barber’s chair in the median on Sunday night while filming the stunt for social media, according to Ocala police. Officers said a Chevrolet Silverado and a Lexus SUV collided nearby. The impact sent the pickup truck into the median, where it struck the 18-year-old as he sat in the chair. The teenager was taken to hospital in serious condition.…

A Flood Watch has been issued across much of Central Texas as Austin faces several rounds of heavy rain and thunderstorms, with the greatest risk of flooding expected on Thursday, October 1. The National Weather Service in Austin-San Antonio said the watch would run from Wednesday evening, September 30, until Friday evening, October 2. Forecasters warned that intense rainfall could cause dangerous flash flooding in parts of the region. A slow-moving front is expected to interact with tropical moisture already in place, creating conditions favourable for repeated downpours. A developing low-pressure system will help drive storms along the boundary over…
Perth home buyers are increasingly prioritising space, workshops and granny flats over beach views, as rising property prices prompt them to seek greater value from the land they buy. Domain’s Spring Homebuyer Report found that pools, granny flats, land and workshops were among the most popular search terms in Perth this year. The findings suggest buyers are looking for ways to expand the usefulness of their homes without necessarily spending more. Alice Stolz, Domain’s national property editor, said the trend represented a shift towards space as “the ultimate luxury”. “What we’re seeing is that basically most Perth buyers are looking…

Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F Kennedy Jr has said Americans should consult artificial intelligence rather than a doctor, prompting a warning from Dr Céline Gounder that the advice is a bad idea. Mr Kennedy made the claim about using AI for health information. Dr Gounder rejected the suggestion and said people should not turn to artificial intelligence instead of medical professionals. The disagreement centres on whether AI should be used as an alternative source of medical advice, with Mr Kennedy arguing that it is better informed than doctors and Dr Gounder opposing that approach.
