Surveillance footage appears to show a woman starting a fire at the rear door of a day-care centre in Philadelphia’s East Mount Airy neighbourhood, prompting concern among residents and a police investigation. The incident happened at about 7pm on 21 September on the 8200 block of Williams Avenue, in the Cedarbrook area, while the centre was closed. Police estimate the woman is in her 20s or 30s. In the video, the woman approaches the back entrance and appears to ignite material at the foot of the door before applying more of what investigators believe may be an accelerant. She briefly…
Australia’s corporate watchdog is stepping up its scrutiny of private credit, warning that mounting pressure on property borrowers and refinancing markets is testing the reliability of fund valuations. The Australian Securities and Investments Commission has issued five new letters putting banks, superannuation funds and insurers on notice as it examines risks in the sector. The regulator’s concerns centre on conditions facing property borrowers and the challenges of refinancing, which could affect how reliably private-credit funds are valued. The action signals increased attention from ASIC as pressure builds across the private-credit market and raises questions about the accuracy of valuations used…

Sunny Hostin has defended her claim that she was the holdout juror in the Daniel Rakowitz murder trial, saying apparent contradictions in old reports relate to separate charges in the case. The View co-host addressed the issue during an interview with executive producer Brian Teta for the programme’s Behind the Table series, after newspaper reports resurfaced suggesting there had been two holdout jurors. Rakowitz was charged in the 1991 New York trial with killing, dismembering and cannibalising Monika Beerle. Hostin previously said she had persuaded the other jurors to find him not criminally responsible by reason of insanity. She now…
Forty people have been rescued and two others have died after a makeshift boat capsized off Mona Island, Puerto Rico, following a fight in which people were reportedly attacked with a machete. The vessel overturned at about 11pm on Sunday, September 27, roughly 10 nautical miles from the island, which lies 41 miles west of Puerto Rico. Survivors told the United States Coast Guard that around 60 people had been aboard. The violence forced passengers into the water as they tried to swim towards Mona Island. None of those on board was wearing a life jacket, according to the Coast…
No improvised explosive devices have been found during a counter-terrorism investigation into a suspected plot targeting RAF Fairford, police have said. A quantity of petrol was recovered while officers searched vehicles near the Gloucestershire air base, which is used by United States forces. Searches have also been carried out at properties in London. Investigative scenes around RAF Fairford are being scaled back and are expected to close completely by Wednesday, police said. Five men arrested on Sunday remain under investigation after being released on bail. All are UK citizens in their 20s and are from London. Laurence Taylor, head of…

The United States has imposed a ban on almost $1 billion (£740 million) of Canadian imports, including alcoholic drinks, dairy products and motorcycles, escalating an already tense trade dispute between the two countries. The measures took effect at 12.01am Eastern time on Tuesday after President Donald Trump ordered the restrictions in response to Canada’s retaliatory tariffs on US goods. The banned products represent a small share of the roughly $880 billion in annual two-way trade between the neighbours. But the move adds to uncertainty over the future of North America’s main trade agreement and risks further retaliation from Ottawa. Alcohol…
Lil Wayne and Madi Cannon are engaged, only months after announcing that they had ended their relationship. The 44-year-old rapper revealed the news while recording a video congratulating fellow musician B.G. on his own engagement. Introducing Cannon, Lil Wayne said: “Congratulations, bitch. And I’m marryin’ this one. This is Madison. This is my fiancée.” The couple appeared together and smiled as they sent their congratulations to B.G. Their relationship had previously faced uncertainty after Lil Wayne dismissed engagement rumours earlier this year and confirmed they had split. At the time, he said they had “had a beautiful thing going with…
