Ukrainian bomber drones have air-dropped kamikaze ground robots more than 10 kilometres behind Russian lines in a new battlefield operation that Kyiv says killed or wounded as many as 3,000 troops. Ukrainian forces described the operation as the first of its kind. “For the first time in the world, during [Ukraine’s] Operation Vivaldi, the…

A reader has criticised the growing emphasis on marketing, administration and economics in Sydney’s arts sector, arguing that cultural expression should focus on meaningful work rather than commercial priorities. Neville Williams, of Darlinghurst, said the arts had become an “industry of sorts” in which management and promotion could matter more than the work itself. His comments followed an article about Michael Rodrigues, NSW’s first 24-hour economy commissioner, and his international travel promoting Sydney. “Are artists of whatever persuasion saying anything any more or are we just another barnacle on the lumbering whale of the body politic?” Williams wrote. He questioned…

Hundreds of protesters are expected to gather in Liverpool on Sunday in support of Palestine Action, as Andy Burnham presides over his first Labour Party conference as Prime Minister. Defend Our Juries, the rights group organising the demonstration, said the “mass, silent sign-holding vigil” would take place close to the conference centre. The protest is against the group’s proscription as a “terrorist” organisation in July 2025. More than 3,600 people have been arrested since the ban was introduced after taking part in civil disobedience actions supporting Palestine Action, often while holding signs reading: “I oppose genocide. I support Palestine Action”.…

Former Australian deputy prime minister Kim Beazley has warned that One Nation entering government would be a “total disaster” and could leave the country a pariah. Beazley, 77, said the party’s recent rise in the polls had prompted his concern that Pauline Hanson’s One Nation could secure a role in government at the next election if its support held. “(It) would be a total disaster for us. We would be risking becoming a pariah,” he said. The former Labor leader and Australian ambassador to the United States said One Nation’s approach to immigration risked damaging Australia’s standing across the region.…

Lachie Neale overcame an unusual build-up to the AFL grand final, spending much of the week listening to lawyers rather than training before ultimately lifting his third premiership cup after victory over Fremantle. Neale endured a slow start to the match, but recovered as the contest progressed and had the final say against his former side. His preparation for the decisive fixture was dominated by legal discussions, leaving limited time for his usual training routine during grand final week. Despite those distractions and his early struggles on the field, Neale finished the occasion as a premiership winner once again.
