Washington DC police have released images of a man sought over an alleged assault on 8th Street, close to the scene where a National Guard member was shot during a separate incident later on Sunday.
The suspect is accused of punching a person in the face after a disagreement in the 400 block of 8th Street, Southeast, according to a police report. He was described as a club promoter and is said to have fled in an unknown direction.
Images released by the Metropolitan Police Department show a bearded man wearing a white shirt, dark jacket and light-coloured trousers.
Police have not said that the man wanted over the assault is connected to the National Guard member shooting. The two incidents took place in the same area on October 18.
At about 11.10pm, National Guard members assigned to patrol the Barracks Row corridor saw a fight outside an establishment and attempted to intervene, MPD said. Police allege that a man involved in the fight produced a gun and opened fire as he tried to leave, hitting one of the guardsmen.
Three National Guard members returned fire, striking the suspect. MPD said the guardsman and suspect were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
Police later identified the shooting suspect as 41-year-old Jerrell Jackson. He was arrested and charged with assault with a dangerous weapon, assault on a police officer and emergency personnel, carrying a pistol without a licence, and being a felon in possession of a firearm.
Anyone who can identify the man sought in the assault is asked to contact police on 202-727-9099 or send a text to 50411. The investigation remains ongoing.
