Julia Jacklin has released her fourth album, The Gem, a deliberately lo-fi record made in a cramped studio above the Melbourne pub that shares its name. The Australian songwriter said the setting allowed her to step away from the polished production of her previous work and make an album she genuinely enjoyed hearing. Jacklin recorded the album over 18 months at producer Robert Muinos’ Rat Shack studio in Collingwood, with the pub’s kitchen, neighbours and other businesses providing an inescapable backdrop. “It felt like I was in the world while making music instead of tucked away in a hidden studio,…

Dozens of delegates walked out during Benjamin Netanyahu’s speech to the United Nations General Assembly, leaving a majority of seats empty as the Israeli prime minister began speaking. General Assembly president Khalilur Rahman repeatedly called for order. Mr Netanyahu described those who departed as “moral cowards”, adding: “In defending itself, Israel is also defending many of the countries whose delegates just left this hall.” He claimed that leaders from some of those countries privately thanked Israel…

A historic building quiz is asking readers to identify a grand Melbourne mansion built in 1890 as a 27-room home for a wealthy brewer. The property was bought about two decades later by EW Cole, known for Coles’ Book Arcade, before being sold to the Anglican Church. It was subsequently converted into a schoolhouse and is now ranked among Melbourne’s top schools. The building’s name and location will be revealed in next week’s quiz. Last week’s answer was the Plant Craft Cottage in the Royal Botanic Gardens.
