A survey of Australian children has found that some are unclear about where everyday food comes from, with potatoes, milk and other farm produce being linked instead to fast-food restaurants, factories and supermarkets. The Norco research questioned 509 children aged between five and nine. It found that 15 per cent believed hot chips originated in a McDonald’s fryer rather than from potatoes grown on farms. More than one in four children said ice cream began in a factory instead of on a dairy farm, while 20 per cent believed supermarket shelves could continue to be replenished without farmers producing the…
Karoline Leavitt returned to the Republican national stage in Dallas on Thursday, attacking Democrats as “extreme liberal socialist” politicians who would raise taxes and undermine private property. The former White House press secretary addressed delegates on the second night of the first Republican Midterm Convention, having travelled to Texas with Donald Trump and members of his administration aboard Air Force One. “We cannot be a wealthy people if we elect extreme liberal socialist Democrats who will raise our rent and taxes, take away our private property, and kill the American dream,” Ms Leavitt said. She added: “Democrat socialist countries always…
America is marking the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, with ceremonies across the country honouring the 2,977 people killed and the thousands who have since died from illnesses linked to the disaster. Families of victims are gathering at the 9/11 Memorial in New York to read the names of those who died when hijacked planes struck the World Trade Centre, the Pentagon and a field near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, on September 11, 2001. The annual commemoration will include seven moments of silence, one more than in previous years. The additional pause recognises first responders, rescue workers and Lower Manhattan…
Wealthy investors are pouring billions into tax-aware long-short strategies designed to generate losses that can offset capital gains, but advisers and tax lawyers are warning that the products may carry significant investment, cost and regulatory risks. Assets held in so-called TALS products have risen from about $2 billion in 2022 to more than $170 billion, according to Tax Alpha Insider. The surge has been driven by investors sitting on substantial gains after years of strong stock-market returns, as well as business owners who have sold companies and executives with concentrated shareholdings. The strategies seek to track equity markets while using…
Judge Judy Sheindlin is preparing to step back from front-of-camera television, with her son Adam Levy set to take over the family courtroom legacy in a new series, Adam’s Law. Sheindlin, 83, said Judy Justice will conclude next month, while she plans to remain involved in television as a producer. The new small-claims programme starring Levy, 58, is due to premiere on Monday, 14 September. “I have a lot of other things of interest,” Sheindlin told People. “I don’t want to do hair and makeup anymore, but I still want my message to get out there.” Sheindlin said she believed…
An American flag was unfurled at sunrise over the Pentagon on Friday as the United States marked 25 years since the September 11 attacks, which killed 2,977 people. The ceremony in Arlington, Virginia, honoured the 184 military personnel and civilians who died when hijackers crashed American Airlines Flight 77 into the headquarters of the US Department of Defence. President Donald Trump was due to attend a separate commemoration at the Pentagon later in the morning, alongside Secretary of War Pete Hegseth and Air Force General Dan Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The flag ceremony formed part of…
Pockets of the Perth property market have shifted in favour of buyers as the spring selling season loses momentum and pre-finance approvals reported by a major mortgage broker have fallen by half. The slowdown is being felt most clearly in areas where purchasers are more dependent on borrowing, with tighter lending conditions reducing the number of people able to compete for homes. That has given some buyers greater scope to negotiate on price and terms, after several years in which limited stock and intense demand allowed sellers to dictate conditions. The change is not uniform across the city. Well-located homes…
British defence intelligence has estimated that about half a million Russian servicemen have been killed in the war in Ukraine, a figure that underscores the scale of Moscow’s losses since the invasion began in 2022. The number, described by UK officials as an assessment rather than a confirmed tally, reflects cumulative casualties among Russian personnel across the conflict’s duration. Analysts emphasise that casualty tallies in such campaigns are difficult to verify in active combat zones, and British officials have cautioned that estimates can vary widely depending on methodology and access to information. If borne out, the toll would represent one…
Most Canadian alcoholic drinks are set to disappear from US shelves under a new import ban announced by President Donald Trump – but Crown Royal whisky may have found a route around the restrictions. The measures, which also cover selected dairy products and motorcycles, will take effect at 12.01am on September 29, following Canada’s retaliatory tariffs on about $20 billion of US goods. The White House says the restrictions are a response to what it describes as continued discrimination against American exports. ([whitehouse.gov](https://www.whitehouse.gov/presidential-actions/2026/09/excluding-certain-canadian-alcoholic-beverages-from-importation-into-the-united-states-in-response-to-continued-discrimination-against-the-commerce-of-the-united-states-with-respect-to-alcoholic-bever/)) Unlike tariffs, which raise costs as goods move through supply chains, an import ban prevents the affected…
The Princess of Wales made a surprise visit to the Royal Marsden Hospital in Chelsea on Friday to see how funds raised through her gruelling Three Peaks Challenge are being used to support people living with cancer. Catherine, 44, met patients undergoing treatment and staff involved in holistic care, which considers a person’s physical, emotional, social and spiritual wellbeing alongside clinical treatment. The visit followed her completion of the National Three Peaks Challenge in June, when she climbed Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Yr Wyddfa, also known as Snowdon, within 24 hours in support of The Royal Marsden Cancer Charity.…
