Australians are setting their sights on retirement savings of more than A$1.25 million, with about one in three hoping to fund a lifestyle of extensive travel and financial freedom in later life. The findings come from the 2026 Real Retirement Report, commissioned by superannuation provider MLC and based on a nationally representative survey of 2,500 Australians aged 18 and over. A similar proportion said they were aiming for between A$750,000 and A$1.25 million, while the remainder expected to retire with up to A$750,000. Renee Howie, MLC’s chief customer officer, said the research showed Australians had ambitious expectations for their retirement…
Donald Trump and JD Vance will headline the Republican National Committee’s first midterm convention in Dallas, as the party seeks to energise its supporters ahead of November’s elections. The two-day gathering will be held at the American Airlines Centre on September 9 and 10. Mr Vance is scheduled to deliver the keynote address on the opening night, while Mr Trump will appear on both evenings and give the closing address on Thursday. The unusual event is intended to showcase Republican candidates and the Trump administration’s agenda before contests that will determine control of Congress. The RNC has described it as…
Lord Ashcroft has warned that Andy Burnham’s early success in Downing Street may prove temporary, arguing that a political reckoning will come when voters begin to focus on the cost of the new Prime Minister’s plans. The Conservative peer and pollster said Mr Burnham had so far “steadied the ship” after taking office, but suggested his opponents would need to be ready to exploit any sign that the Government was struggling to pay for its promises. Britain’s borrowing position is central to the warning. For years, the UK paid less to borrow than many other major economies. It now pays…
Simon Cowell is understood to be exploring a return for The X Factor on ITV, with plans for a younger, social-media-focused version of the Saturday night talent show and Cheryl potentially in the frame for a judging role. The proposed revival would aim to reconnect the programme with a Gen Z audience, with TikTok and YouTube expected to play a far greater part in the search for new performers than they did during the original run. Reports suggest contestants could submit performances online and allow viewers to help decide who progresses, potentially replacing or supplementing the traditional audition process. The…
An 86-year-old disabled veteran has spent a month’s worth of his Social Security payments on a billboard demanding action over crime on Seattle’s Aurora Avenue. Victor Fleming, who has lived in the area since 1955, paid for the sign after growing frustrated by what he described as persistent violence and criminal activity along the north Seattle corridor. The billboard was displayed for two weeks and carried a sharply worded message attacking the city’s handling of crime. Fleming said he was prepared to pay for it if it prompted officials to act. “The sun goes down, they come out,” he said,…

Police said the alleged offender, a man in his 50s known to the group, fled the property on foot. Despite their injuries, the three people managed to contact emergency services. They were later airlifted to Melbourne, where they remain in a critical condition at…
Robin Morgan, the poet, writer and feminist activist who helped shape the second wave of the women’s movement in the United States, has died aged 85. Morgan died in New York on Saturday after a series of health problems in recent weeks, her son Blake Morgan said. Her death was confirmed by the Women’s Media Center, the organisation she co-founded with Jane Fonda and Gloria Steinem, who died earlier this week. Julie Burton, president of the Women’s Media Center, described Morgan as “one of the architects of the contemporary women’s movement”, praising her writing and her “global leadership for justice…

Robert Pattinson has responded to Chris Hansen’s criticism of his portrayal in Primetime, saying he hopes the former television presenter will regard the film as a compliment. Pattinson was speaking at the Venice Film Festival on Saturday, where the A24 drama had its world premiere. He plays Hansen in the film, which is inspired by the Dateline NBC investigation To Catch a Predator. Hansen has described Pattinson’s performance as “overly dramatic”, although he conceded that the actor had produced “a pretty good imitation” in the trailer. He has also complained that the film uses his name, as well as those…
