A major manhunt is under way in Victoria after three people were allegedly attacked with an axe at a rural property in Tyers, in the Gippsland region, leaving them critically injured.
The victims, including an elderly woman and an elderly man, were attacked at a home in Cowies Road at about 12.30pm on Saturday, 5 September. Police said the alleged offender, a man in his 50s known to the group, fled the property on foot.
Despite their injuries, the three people managed to contact emergency services. They were later airlifted to Melbourne, where they remain in a critical condition at The Alfred hospital.
Victoria Police believe the incident was targeted but have warned that the suspect may still be carrying an axe and a handsaw. The search had continued for more than 20 hours by Saturday night.
The man was last seen wearing a black and mustard-coloured jacket and carrying a black backpack. Police have urged residents to remain vigilant and not to approach him if he is spotted.
Anyone who sees the suspect should call triple zero immediately. Investigators are also appealing for CCTV or dashcam footage, and information can be passed to Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
