Brevard Public Schools cancelled classes across the district on Monday, November 2, after flooding and severe weather affected parts of central Florida.
The decision was announced early in the day, with the district saying the closure was made to protect pupils, staff and families as heavy rain continued across Brevard County.
“The safety of our students, staff and families is our top priority,” the school district said. It urged residents to take care, remain safe and avoid roads covered by floodwater.
Flood watch remains in force across east central Florida
The National Weather Service had issued a Flood Watch for east central Florida until 7pm on Monday, alongside early flash flood warnings covering parts of Brevard County.
Forecasters warned that already saturated ground, particularly from Brevard County south towards the Treasure Coast and Okeechobee, could lead to further localised flash flooding.
Some areas were expected to receive between one and three inches of additional rainfall before conditions began to improve during the afternoon.
A weather alert posted on the Brevard Public Schools website confirmed that schools were closed for the day because of inclement weather.
