Marco Palestra has admitted he needs to improve after a difficult start to his Chelsea career, following his first Premier League start in the 2-0 victory over Manchester United.
The 21-year-old defender joined from Atalanta in the summer as the first signing of Xabi Alonso’s tenure. However, an injury delayed his competitive debut and disrupted his early adaptation to English football.
Palestra’s display against Manchester United attracted criticism over his defensive positioning, but he remains highly regarded at Stamford Bridge and is determined to justify Chelsea’s investment.
Marco Palestra admits he must improve at Chelsea
Reflecting on his move, Palestra said he had never expected to represent the west London club when he was younger.
“I was just happy because, when I was young, I never thought I could be a Chelsea player,” he said.
“Now I am still happy, but I need to improve myself to win with this team.”
Chelsea paid about £45 million to sign Palestra from Atalanta, with the Italian agreeing a six-year contract that includes an option for a further season. Liverpool and Tottenham were also reported to have shown interest before he chose Stamford Bridge.
His progress was affected by the injury he suffered early in the season. Alonso said in September that Palestra had been frustrated after making a positive impression during pre-season, while also indicating that opportunities would come once he was fully fit.
Palestra’s versatility is one of the qualities Chelsea value. He can operate at right-back or as a wing-back, cover on the left and provide the tactical flexibility favoured by Alonso.
Given that he has had limited time to establish a rhythm, his difficult opening start should not be viewed as a definitive judgement on his prospects. Chelsea signed Palestra for his long-term potential, and patience will be required as he adapts to the demands of Premier League football.
