San Francisco Bay Area weather is expected to remain mostly sunny and seasonable on Sunday, although residents in low-lying coastal and bayside communities have been warned of minor flooding around high tide.
The National Weather Service has issued a Coastal Flood Advisory covering parts of the San Francisco Bay shoreline, Monterey Bay, the Big Sur coast and the Pacific coastline. The advisory remains in effect until 3pm on Thursday, October 29.
Up to 1.9ft of water above ground level could affect vulnerable areas near shorelines and tidal waterways. Forecasters said high tides may flood low-lying infrastructure, cause isolated road closures and increase coastal erosion. At the San Francisco tidal gauge, the highest tide of the period is expected on Wednesday, October 28, when water levels could reach 1.9ft above normal. The National Weather Service said the predictions include as much as 1ft of additional surge, increasing the risk of coastal flooding.
Sunday’s forecast calls for mostly sunny skies, light winds and temperatures close to seasonal levels. Conditions are expected to turn cooler during the working week, with highs in San Francisco falling towards the low 60s Fahrenheit—around 16 to 18C—in the latter half of the week. There is also a slight chance of rain from Friday into the following weekend, although forecasters cautioned that confidence remains limited this far ahead.
People travelling near the coast have been advised to allow extra time, avoid driving through water of unknown depth and never pass road barricades. Property owners in flood-prone areas have also been urged to take precautions before the highest tides arrive.
