Cole Palmer has apologised to Chelsea supporters after being sent off during the club’s 2-0 home defeat by Tottenham.
The England international was dismissed late in the match after receiving a second yellow card, leaving Chelsea to finish the game with 10 men. Tottenham’s victory was a rare home defeat for Chelsea against their London rivals.
Palmer acknowledged on social media that his performance and conduct had not been good enough, accepting responsibility for the red card.
The incident adds to Chelsea’s ongoing disciplinary concerns. The club experienced similar problems last season and have continued to collect red cards during the current campaign.
Cole Palmer’s difficult run of form
Palmer has also struggled to reproduce the level he showed after joining Chelsea from Manchester City in the summer of 2023.
He scored 25 goals in 45 appearances in all competitions during his first season at Stamford Bridge. That figure fell to 18 goals in 52 matches the following campaign, before dropping again to 11 in 34 games last term.
Palmer has scored four goals in Chelsea’s first 10 games this season, with his latest display against Tottenham offering little influence in a significant match.
Thomas Tuchel left Palmer out of England’s World Cup squad in the summer, a decision which was expected to give the former Manchester City player time to rest and refocus. His latest sending-off represents another setback as he attempts to return to his best form.
