A 27-year-old man has been charged with negligent driving occasioning death after a three-year-old girl was struck by a black Range Rover in Auburn, western Sydney.
The girl was hit on Normanby Road at about 2pm, as the vehicle was believed to be entering a suburban driveway. She was taken to Westmead Hospital in a critical condition but was later declared dead.
The driver was taken to Auburn Hospital for mandatory testing following the crash. After being released, he was taken to Auburn police station and charged.
He was granted conditional bail and is due to appear before Burwood Local Court on Wednesday.
Police said the man was not related to the girl. His relationship with the occupants of the home, along with the circumstances leading to the collision, remains under investigation.
A crime scene was established at the property, where forensic officers photographed the Range Rover and examined the driveway and surrounding area. Investigators also photographed the driver’s seat and the boot of the vehicle.
Normanby Road is one block behind The Crescent, a busy road running alongside the railway tracks to Auburn Station.
