Arsenal’s defensive masterclass in beating Liverpool at Anfield has earned widespread praise, with Jamie Carragher describing Declan Rice as a world-class midfielder after a performance that ended the Gunners’ long wait for a league victory at the ground.
Arsenal had not won at Liverpool since 2012, when Mikel Arteta was still playing in their midfield. This time, Arteta’s side absorbed sustained pressure and produced a disciplined display that restricted Liverpool to no shots on target.
It was the first time on record that Liverpool had failed to register an attempt on target at home. Arsenal also used their ability to win fouls to disrupt the hosts’ momentum, drawing 18 in total.
“I love when there is something that we haven’t done for many years,” Arteta said. He praised his players for a “remarkable” defensive performance and hailed the spirit they showed in carrying the Arsenal shirt.
Rice played a central role in the victory, providing the assist for Kai Havertz’s winning goal and protecting Arsenal during Liverpool’s strongest spells. His 62 touches were the most recorded by any Arsenal player.
“In the end, that defensive line, the way we stick together, that togetherness we have, is undefeated,” Rice said. “It’s nothing I’ve ever seen before.”
Jamie Carragher praises Arsenal’s defensive masterclass
Carragher highlighted Arsenal’s collective resilience but reserved particular praise for Rice, who he said had produced one of the most complete performances of the campaign.
“To come to Anfield and be put under that much pressure and not have a shot on target from the opposition, or Liverpool not get a big chance given the money they have spent on their attack, is outstanding,” Carragher said.
He added: “When you think about Arsenal winning titles, especially in ’89 and ’91 with Tony Adams and that famous back four, I think we’re getting close to putting this back four in that conversation.”
Gary Neville labelled the display a “defensive masterclass”, comparing Arsenal’s compactness and game management with the approach associated with Jose Mourinho.
Rice was also instrumental in the decisive attacking moment, sending a low cross across the area for Havertz to finish at the far post. His defensive interventions then helped Arsenal preserve their advantage.
“He’s one of the best midfield players Arsenal have ever had,” Carragher said. “They’ve obviously had some great ones. He’s right up there with the best of them. He’s the best midfield player in the Premier League by a long way. It’s not even a debate.”
Arteta said Arsenal’s application was the most pleasing aspect of the result. Under his management, the club have won 81 per cent of league matches in which they scored first, and their latest victory underlined their ability to protect a lead under pressure.
“Not only for the victory, but for the way we’ve done it, the spirit that we showed, the way we carried this shirt, this badge,” Arteta said. “It’s a commitment of every single player in every action to deliver those kinds of stats.”
