Eli Savit, Michigan’s attorney general-elect, has described the long wait for results on election night before he was declared the winner of the statewide race.
The Democrat defeated Republican Doug Lloyd in the November 3 election and will take over as Michigan’s top law enforcement official in 2027.
Speaking after the result, Mr Savit reflected on the moment he learned he had secured the post and discussed the responsibility of moving into the role.
He will succeed Dana Nessel, who has served as attorney general since 2019 but is unable to seek another term because of Michigan’s term limits.
Mr Savit is currently the elected prosecutor for Washtenaw County, a position he has held since 2021. Mr Lloyd, his Republican opponent, is the prosecutor for Eaton County.
The attorney general represents Michigan in court and oversees a department responsible for civil and criminal cases, legal advice to state agencies and enforcement action on behalf of residents.
Mr Savit’s victory means Democrats will retain control of the attorney general’s office for another four years as he prepares to begin the transition into statewide office.
