Everton are considering a move for free-agent striker Mauro Icardi as David Moyes looks to strengthen a forward line left short after the collapse of their deadline-day pursuit of Folarin Balogun.
There has been no advanced contact or formal offer at this stage, but TEAMtalk reports that the 33-year-old Argentine would be open to joining the Toffees if the club decides to proceed.
Icardi became available after leaving Galatasaray when his contract expired at the end of June. He spent four seasons with the Turkish club, scoring 77 goals in 134 appearances and helping them win four league titles, the Turkish Cup and the Turkish Super Cup, according to Anadolu Agency.
Everton assess free-agent striker options
The prospect of signing Icardi has emerged after Everton were unable to complete a deal for Balogun during a chaotic transfer deadline day. The proposed move for the Monaco and United States forward broke down, leaving Moyes with Thierno Barry as the club’s only recognised senior centre-forward.
Moyes has previously indicated that Everton could explore the free-agent market, and Icardi’s availability gives the club an opportunity to add experience without waiting for the January transfer window.
The former Inter Milan and Paris Saint-Germain striker has scored 250 goals in 478 appearances during his senior career. Although he is no longer at the peak of his powers, Everton are understood to be considering whether his experience and goalscoring record could provide useful competition and cover for Barry.
Everton have made an encouraging start to the Premier League season, taking five points from their opening three matches after beating Crystal Palace, drawing with Bournemouth and recovering from two goals down to draw 2-2 with Manchester United.
They face Tottenham Hotspur in their next league fixture on Saturday, September 12, with the club continuing to weigh up whether a late move for Icardi would provide a short-term solution to their shortage of attacking options.
