One person has died and four others were injured in an Elizabeth mass shooting during a candlelight vigil in New Jersey.
Police were called to the junction of Irvington Avenue and Elmwood Place shortly after 9.30pm on Monday, October 26, where they found five people suffering from gunshot wounds. One victim was pronounced dead, while the four others were taken to hospital for treatment. The gunfire broke out as mourners gathered for the vigil, authorities said. Neighbours told CBS New York that the event was held to remember a man who was fatally shot in the area about seven years ago, although officials have not publicly confirmed the purpose of the gathering. Investigators sealed off several blocks around Irvington Avenue as they collected evidence. More than 20 markers could be seen on the ground, identifying shell casings and other items believed to be connected to the shooting.

A red car was later seen burnt out in Newark, but investigators had not established whether it was connected to the Elizabeth shooting.
The victims’ identities had not been released. Union County Prosecutor William A Daniel’s office said the investigation remained active and ongoing.
