Pierre Gasly claimed the first pole position of his Formula One career at Monza, with George Russell qualifying second and Australia’s Oscar Piastri taking third for McLaren ahead of the Italian Grand Prix.
Gasly produced a final lap of 1 minute 21.786 seconds around the Autodromo Nazionale Monza, edging Mercedes driver Russell by just 0.060 seconds. Piastri was a further 0.120 seconds adrift in third.
The result marks a landmark moment for Alpine and Gasly, who will start Sunday’s race from the front of the grid after topping an exceptionally tight qualifying session.
Piastri’s McLaren team-mate Lando Norris qualified ninth, while Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton secured fourth and fifth respectively at the team’s home circuit.
Max Verstappen was sixth for Red Bull, with Mercedes’ Kimi Antonelli seventh and Alpine’s Franco Colapinto eighth. The Italian Grand Prix will take place at Monza on Sunday.
