Gemma Chan has said she hopes to return as Astrid in the planned Crazy Rich Asians sequel series, despite being left off its recently announced cast list.
The 43-year-old actress addressed the speculation while attending a screening of her upcoming film Josephine at the 2026 BFI London Film Festival in London.
Asked whether she would appear in the television adaptation, Chan said: “I love Crazy Rich Asians, I love the people involved. Astrid has such a special place in my heart so I hope so. I can’t say any more than that for now.”
Chan played Astrid, a cousin of Henry Golding’s character Nick, in the hit film. Her omission from the sequel series’ cast announcement, alongside Harry Shum Jr, has prompted a strong reaction from fans.
Astrid ended her marriage to Michael, played by Pierre Png, in the film before reconnecting with her former fiancé Charlie Wu, portrayed by Shum Jr, during the mid-credits scene.
The planned continuation was previously expected to focus more closely on Astrid and Charlie. A separate spin-off film centred on their romance was reported to be in development in 2022.
A Broadway musical adaptation of Crazy Rich Asians is also in the works, with the film’s director Jon M Chu attached to direct what would be his Broadway directorial debut.
