Harry Styles has faced criticism over artwork on a concert ticket showing a car flying above New York’s Empire State Building, after the image circulated online during the week of the 25th anniversary of the 11 September attacks.
The ticket was issued for Styles’s Madison Square Garden show on Wednesday, 9 September. Its design appears to depict a yellow car passing close to the skyscraper’s spire, leaving a trail behind it.
Some fans questioned the decision to use the image so close to the anniversary, with one describing it as “insane” and another asking who had approved the design. Others acknowledged that the artwork appeared intended to be playful, but said its timing was inappropriate.
The reaction comes as New York prepares to mark 25 years since the attacks of 11 September 2001, in which nearly 3,000 people were killed after hijacked planes were flown into the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon, with another crashing in Pennsylvania.
Page Six reported that it had contacted representatives for the 32-year-old singer for comment. No explanation for the ticket artwork has been publicly given.
Styles is performing 30 dates at Madison Square Garden as part of his Together, Together world tour. The residency began on 26 August and is due to conclude on 31 October, with Jamie xx listed as a special guest.
His next New York performance is scheduled for Friday, 11 September, at 8pm, two days after the ticket at the centre of the criticism was issued.
