A Houston mosque has hosted its first law enforcement appreciation event, bringing officers, elected representatives and local residents together to strengthen ties between the community and the agencies responsible for its safety.
Masjid At-Tawhid held the gathering at its community service centre on Hirsch Road in north-east Houston, honouring Houston Police Assistant Chief Yasar Bashir, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez and Fort Bend County Sheriff Eric Fagan.

Imam Qasim Ibn Ali Khan said the event was inspired in part by additional patrols arranged around the mosque by Harris County sheriff’s deputies.
He said he later learned that Sheriff Gonzalez had instructed deputies to pay particular attention to the site amid concerns arising from events in the US and abroad. Deputies monitored the entrance and checked on worshippers, an effort Khan said had made a lasting impression.
The imam also spoke of the mosque’s constructive relationship with the Houston Police Department and said the gathering was intended to recognise public servants rather than focus on divisions between law enforcement and the communities they serve.
More than 200 people joined the event virtually, with participants taking part from seven counties, according to Khan.
State Representative Harold Dutton, who represents District 142, delivered the keynote address. He said he had visited the mosque on numerous occasions and praised Khan and the organisation for their work in the wider community.
Harris County Precinct 2 Commissioner Adrian Garcia also attended. Drawing on his previous service as a Houston police officer and Harris County sheriff, he highlighted the importance of public service and building trust through regular contact with residents.
Khan said he had addressed Houston City Council several weeks before the event, inviting members to attend and encouraging similar initiatives across Harris and Fort Bend counties.
He said faith leaders could play a role in creating opportunities for residents and officers to meet in a constructive setting. Organisers hope to make the appreciation day an annual event at Masjid At-Tawhid.
