Newcastle United are reportedly considering a January move for Al Ahli striker Ivan Toney, with manager Matthias Jaissle said to be pushing for a reunion with his former player.
Reports in Saudi Arabia claim the England international has emerged as a leading target as Jaissle looks to strengthen Newcastle’s attack during the winter transfer window.
Toney worked under Jaissle at Al Ahli before the German left to succeed Eddie Howe at St James’ Park this summer. The manager is now understood to be keen on bringing the 30-year-old back to the Premier League.
Newcastle identify Ivan Toney as attacking target
Toney established himself as a prominent forward during his time with Brentford, when his performances attracted interest from clubs including Arsenal and Chelsea.
He ultimately moved to Saudi Arabia after Al Ahli made the opportunity available, but a return to English football could now be possible if Newcastle pursue their interest.
The Magpies are looking for greater strength in attack after selling Alexander Isak to Liverpool just over a year ago. Their subsequent options have not provided the desired solution, with Nick Woltemade currently on loan at Juventus and Yoane Wissa having struggled with injury problems since joining the club.
Toney’s experience and previous relationship with Jaissle could make him an attractive option as Newcastle seek to improve their goalscoring in the second half of the season.
