Michael Carrick has held a meeting with Manchester United’s players and staff in an attempt to rally the squad, with his position as manager under growing pressure.
The discussion was reportedly productive, although Carrick faces a difficult test when United travel to Stamford Bridge to face Chelsea in the Premier League this weekend.
United have won only two of their 12 matches in all competitions so far, leaving little room for further setbacks. A stronger performance against Chelsea is therefore viewed as crucial as scrutiny of Carrick intensifies.
Michael Carrick’s future at Manchester United
Carrick guided Manchester United to third place in the Premier League last season as interim manager, recovering from a poor start under Ruben Amorim.
His permanent appointment has brought a tougher spell, however, with the 45-year-old struggling to reproduce that form. His previous managerial experience came in the Championship with Middlesbrough, despite his longstanding reputation as a highly regarded coach.
Fabrizio Romano has said that Manchester United are considering alternative managers should Carrick leave the role soon. Eddie Howe is understood to be among the leading candidates, while Antonio Conte, Julian Nagelsmann and Unai Emery have also been identified as possible options.
For now, Carrick remains in charge and will hope the meeting with his players and staff can help United respond at Chelsea.
