A mistrial has been declared in the murder trial of Lindsay Clancy after a Massachusetts jury failed to reach a unanimous verdict over the deaths of her three children.
Judge William Sullivan ended proceedings at Plymouth Superior Court on Friday, September 4, after jurors remained deadlocked following seven days of deliberations.
Clancy, 36, is charged with three counts of murder in connection with the deaths of her children at the family home in Duxbury on January 24, 2023. She has pleaded not guilty.
The trial centred on whether Clancy was criminally responsible for the killings or was suffering from a severe mental illness at the time. Her defence argued that she was experiencing postpartum psychosis, while prosecutors maintained that she understood her actions.
The mistrial leaves the charges unresolved. Prosecutors may seek to try the case again, although no decision on a retrial was announced in court.
Clancy, a former nurse, survived an apparent suicide attempt after the children’s deaths and has remained in psychiatric care while the legal proceedings have continued.
