Manchester United fans reacted with a sarcastic cheer when Diogo Dalot was substituted during their chaotic 4-4 draw with Aston Villa at Old Trafford.
The Portuguese full-back was taken off in the 66th minute, with Patrick Dorgu coming on in his place. The response from the stands reflected frustration with Dalot’s performance rather than appreciation.
Dalot’s difficult afternoon had begun as United fell 2-0 behind inside the opening four minutes, after goals from Alysson and Nicolas Jackson. Bruno Fernandes and Youri Tielemans then brought the hosts level before half-time.
Diogo Dalot substitution followed costly second-half errors
Shortly after the restart, Dalot conceded a penalty after fouling Alysson inside the area. John McGinn converted from the spot to restore Villa’s lead.
Six minutes later, Leon Goretzka added Villa’s fourth, leaving Dalot exposed and prompting Michael Carrick to replace him with Dorgu.
The change ultimately transformed United’s fortunes as they launched a second comeback from two goals down. Dorgu supplied Joshua Zirkzee for United’s third goal in the 91st minute, pulling the hosts back to 4-3.
Then, in the sixth minute of stoppage time, Dorgu headed in the equaliser to complete a remarkable turnaround and secure a 4-4 draw.
