Juventus are reportedly unwilling to sell Pierre Kalulu during the January transfer window, dealing a setback to Manchester United and Liverpool as both clubs assess defensive reinforcements.
The 26-year-old France international has become an important member of the Juventus squad since moving to Turin, with Premier League interest in his services continuing to grow. Manchester United are understood to be particularly keen, while Liverpool are also monitoring the defender.
Juventus resist January move for Pierre Kalulu
Manchester Evening News reports that Juventus do not want to consider offers for Kalulu midway through the season. The Italian club regard him as one of Luciano Spalletti’s trusted defenders and are reluctant to weaken their squad during the campaign.
Kalulu’s ability to play both centre-back and right-back has contributed to his appeal. His versatility would offer a potential solution for clubs seeking defensive cover across more than one position.
Reports from GOAL have suggested that Manchester United have sent scouts to Italy to watch the defender. Liverpool and Tottenham are also said to be among the Premier League clubs interested in his situation.
Juventus reportedly placed a valuation of about €50 million on Kalulu during the summer. Any attempt to sign him in January could therefore require a significant fee, with the Turin club potentially seeking more for an important player halfway through the season.
Manchester United’s defensive need
Kalulu may be of particular interest to Manchester United after defensive vulnerabilities emerged early in the season. His mobility and experience could allow Michael Carrick’s side to address more than one area with a single signing.
Liverpool’s interest is also understandable, although the urgency of their need could depend on how their existing defensive options develop over the coming months.
