Kobbie Mainoo’s Manchester United turnaround has seen the midfielder move from the brink of a loan departure to becoming a key figure in Michael Carrick’s plans at Old Trafford.
Mainoo’s future appeared uncertain less than a year ago, with a move to Napoli discussed during the January transfer window before Ruben Amorim was dismissed. The proposed loan was described as concrete and at an advanced stage.
Carrick’s arrival has since transformed the 21-year-old’s position within the squad. Mainoo is now considered central to United’s midfield project, despite the summer arrivals of Carlos Baleba, Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans increasing competition for places.
Michael Carrick has changed Kobbie Mainoo’s Manchester United role
Fabrizio Romano said on his YouTube channel that Mainoo’s standing at Manchester United had changed dramatically in the space of eight or nine months.
“Then, talking about Man Utd as we are discussing Man Utd, I wanted to mention how happy is everyone at Man Utd with Kobbie Mainoo,” Romano said.
He added: “Then Utd changed the manager, Michael Carrick arrives, and Mainoo immediately becomes a crucial part of the project. Now with Utd, they are delighted with Kobbie Mainoo.”
Mainoo’s performances have reinforced that confidence. He impressed in matches against Ipswich and Everton before producing another strong display in United’s 4-0 Champions League victory over Sabah.
The Guardian has described his progress from an outsider to a central figure under Carrick, with his passing, composure and defensive contribution helping to shape United’s new midfield.
Mainoo is now operating deeper, helping control the tempo and playing with greater freedom and confidence. Rather than being displaced by United’s new midfield options, he appears to have responded to the competition by raising his level.
The development represents a significant change for a homegrown player who appeared close to leaving on loan. Under Carrick, Mainoo has instead become one of Manchester United’s most trusted young players.
