Lisandro Martinez wants to leave Manchester United and does not intend to renew his contract, according to reports. The Argentina international’s position follows a turbulent period in which he questioned the club’s ambition and summer recruitment strategy, including the work of sporting director Jason Wilcox.
United are understood to be considering whether it would be worthwhile extending the defender’s deal by a further year. The club are also planning to reshape their defence over the next two transfer windows, adding uncertainty over Martinez’s future at Old Trafford.
Lisandro Martinez transfer interest
Atletico Madrid expressed an interest in Martinez during the summer and could be among the clubs to monitor his situation if he becomes available.
The prospect of Martinez leaving represents a significant change from his earlier standing at Manchester United. He was previously regarded as one of the emotional and tactical leaders of the team’s defence.
Former manager Erik ten Hag described him as “an absolute leader” and “an absolute warrior”, highlighting the spirit that made him an important presence in the back line.
However, Martinez’s injury problems and recent public criticism are understood to have damaged his relationship with the club. Despite that, he remains an experienced international defender and is still 28, meaning United could risk losing a player with transfer value.
The club may therefore need to make a firm decision before January. If there is no realistic prospect of a new agreement, triggering the additional year could protect United’s negotiating position and prevent potential suitors from exploiting a lack of leverage.
For now, the relationship appears increasingly difficult to repair, with a 2027 departure looking more likely than a long-term continuation at Manchester United.
