Alexis Mac Allister is expected to remain at Liverpool this season, but Fabrizio Romano has warned that the midfielder’s long-term future could become a major issue in 2027.
Romano said intermediaries had proposed Mac Allister to Manchester City during the summer transfer window as an alternative to Enzo Fernandez. City, however, continued to prioritise the Chelsea midfielder and no move for Mac Allister materialised.
The Argentina international also had no desire to leave Anfield. Romano said Mac Allister remained deeply attached to Liverpool, their supporters and his team-mates, and was determined to continue his career on Merseyside.
Alexis Mac Allister contract concerns at Liverpool
Mac Allister’s public comments have nevertheless raised questions about his contract situation. Liverpool have not yet offered him a new deal, despite the player entering the final two years of his existing agreement.
Romano believes the club will need to act before the 2027 summer transfer window if it wants to prevent uncertainty from escalating. Should no progress be made, Mac Allister could seriously consider leaving next summer even with two years still remaining on his contract.
The midfielder recently expressed his disappointment at the lack of a new contract but made clear that he would continue to give his full commitment to Liverpool while he remains at the club.
For now, Mac Allister’s focus is on establishing himself under Andoni Iraola and helping Liverpool’s title and European campaigns. His preference is to stay and fight for his place, although his contract situation means he will be one of the players to watch when the 2027 transfer window approaches.
