The Milwaukee Brewers returned to Wisconsin on Thursday, 29 October, to a hero’s welcome after securing the first World Series title in the club’s history.
Hundreds of supporters gathered at Milwaukee Mitchell International Airport to greet the players, coaches and staff following their 4-1 series victory over the Tampa Bay Rays.
The Brewers clinched the championship with a 4-1 win in Game Five at Tropicana Field on Wednesday night, ending a wait that stretched back to the club’s last World Series appearance in 1982.
Milwaukee’s victory marked the city’s first World Series title since the Braves won in 1957, before the franchise moved to Atlanta. The Brewers had reached the 1982 final but were defeated by the St Louis Cardinals.
The team’s homecoming came ahead of a championship parade planned for Friday, 30 October. The procession is due to begin at 10am at the junction of North Fourth Street and West Wisconsin Avenue before travelling through downtown Milwaukee to Henry Maier Festival Park.
A championship rally and fan festival will follow at the Summerfest grounds, where the first 50,000 attendees are expected to receive a commemorative rally towel.
