Apple’s iOS 27 is set to introduce iPhone Handoff, allowing users to move between two iPhones while keeping the same mobile number.
The feature was briefly mentioned during Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference in June, but further details have now emerged in a demonstration running through Xcode 27’s Device Hub.
The setup pairs two handsets, designating one as the primary iPhone and the other as a companion device. This would allow users to temporarily use a second phone without changing the number associated with their account.
The timing coincides with expectations that Apple is preparing to launch a foldable handset, reportedly called the iPhone Ultra. Owners may not want to carry a larger and more expensive phone on every occasion, making it possible to switch to a smaller or cheaper iPhone when appropriate.
iPhone Handoff will depend on support from mobile network operators. References to T-Mobile in the United States and Telekom in Germany have been identified in the software, although wider availability has not been confirmed.
Apple has not yet detailed which other carriers will support the feature or whether all existing iPhone models will be eligible to act as a companion device.
