A man has been arrested after an Indianapolis hit-and-run in which a nine-year-old boy was killed and a five-year-old was injured, with police using an automated number-plate reader to trace the suspected vehicle.
Officers were called shortly after 1.30pm on Sunday, October 4, after reports of a child lying in the road in the 6700 block of Eagle Pointe Drive North, near West 46th Street and Interstate 465.
They found two boys who appeared to have been struck by a vehicle. The driver had left the scene, according to the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department.
Both children were taken to hospital. The nine-year-old later died from his injuries, while the younger boy was reported to be in a stable condition. Police have not said whether the boys were related.
Investigators spoke to residents and reviewed available video footage, which helped them identify the vehicle’s registration number.
Using automated number-plate reader technology, officers tracked the vehicle’s last known location and passed the information to Lawrence police. Officers located it in the 10300 block of Pendleton Pike, roughly three hours after the collision, and arrested a man.
The suspect was held on a preliminary charge of leaving the scene of an accident causing death. The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office will decide what charges are ultimately filed.
Police have appealed for anyone with information about the crash or the vehicle involved to contact 911, Crime Stoppers or the IMPD Crash Investigations Unit.
