A 19-year-old man has been arrested in North Carolina after allegedly recording a sexual encounter without permission and sharing the footage with a 32-member fraternity group chat, police said.
Alexander Michael Evanoff is accused of using his mobile phone to film a woman during sex on 19 September before sending the explicit video to a chat linked to Sigma Alpha Epsilon at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte.
He faces one charge of disclosing private images and two felony counts of secret peeping. Evanoff was arrested on Monday and released the following day on a $10,000 bond, according to court and jail records.
An affidavit alleges that Evanoff admitted intentionally recording the encounter and distributing the footage. He also reportedly told detectives that he had neither asked for nor received the woman’s consent.
The woman later confronted him, asking whether sending the video to the fraternity chat was intended to make him “appear cool”. According to the affidavit, Evanoff responded affirmatively and apologised.
Saylor Schwab, assistant director of communications for Sigma Alpha Epsilon, said Evanoff had not been initiated into the fraternity and that his bid for membership was withdrawn after its leaders learned of the allegations.
“The individual is not a member of Sigma Alpha Epsilon and was never initiated into the North Carolina Beta Chapter,” Schwab said. “Sigma Alpha Epsilon condemns any and all forms of sexual misconduct.”
A spokesperson for the University of North Carolina at Charlotte said Evanoff was not currently enrolled at the university.
“The alleged conduct in this case, if true, is reprehensible,” the spokesperson said. “It is not what we expect or will tolerate from members of our campus community.”
The allegations have not been tested in court. Evanoff’s lawyer was contacted for comment.
