The husband of Amanda Dow, a Liberal candidate in Victoria’s upcoming state election, was allegedly assaulted after approaching a man who was removing party campaign signs in Mernda.
Police and the Liberal Party confirmed the incident took place on Sunday afternoon. The campaign said Ms Dow’s husband suffered facial fractures and was taken to hospital before being discharged the following day.
A 59-year-old man has been charged with assault and criminal damage. He has been released on bail and is due to face court in February.
The alleged attack comes amid growing concern over violence involving politicians and their associates. On the same weekend, Victoria’s emergency services minister, Paul Edbrooke, found a large bullet on his car, which he described as a “death threat” and blamed on the firefighters’ union.
It also followed the week in which federal MP Helen Haines lost both legs in a car crash that police allege was deliberate.
