Pope Leo XIV is set to be discharged from hospital on Saturday after undergoing surgery on his right lung, the Vatican has announced.
The 71-year-old pontiff spent four days in hospital after doctors identified a nodule that appeared to be cancerous. During the operation, it was confirmed as adenocarcinoma, a common form of lung cancer.
Leo’s personal physician and surgeon have approved his release after reviewing blood test results, a chest X-ray and his clinical condition. They said he was “fit for discharge from the hospital”.
The Pope is expected to leave in the early afternoon and will return to St Peter’s Square for his traditional Sunday blessing.
