Sorrento Beach in Perth has been closed to swimmers after a suspected fatal shark attack, with police taking over the scene and further details yet to be confirmed.
Ambulance crews were called to the popular West Australian beach at about 10.30am on Friday following reports of a shark incident. Three ambulance crews have since been stood down.
Water Police and the Police Air Wing have been deployed as officers establish the circumstances of what happened. Police are expected to officially confirm further details once their initial inquiries are complete.
The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development will also be involved in the investigation. Bathers have been told not to enter the water and urged to take caution on the sunny 26C day.
The incident follows a shark attack at Glenfield Beach, north of Geraldton, on Monday. A surfer in his 50s was seriously injured and taken under lights and sirens to Geraldton Health Campus, where he is now in a stable condition.
Surf Life Saving WA’s helicopter shark patrols began for the summer last week.
