A chance meeting in San Diego led to an Australian Navy warship receiving a much-needed supply of Vegemite, according to David Sayers of Gwandalan.
Sayers said his late friend Doug Bower, who was chief steward on Australian container ships and tankers, had tied up behind the warship during a visit to the US. On seeing the Australian flag, the captain hurried aboard.
“He explained that they’d been in the US for 10 months and couldn’t buy Vegemite anywhere,” Sayers wrote. “Could Doug spare some?”
Bower handed over the three-and-a-half boxes he had on board. The grateful captain then left with a rating carrying the supplies, ensuring that the spread proved popular at breakfast the following morning.
