The rector of a Brazilian university has died after a piece of acrylic roofing was blown from a building and struck him in the head during a walking tour in Scottsdale, Arizona.
Rogerio Renato Mateucci, 55, was visiting the Taliesin West complex, the former winter home and studio of architect Frank Lloyd Wright, when the incident happened at about 2pm on Friday October 16.
He was walking with a group near Sweetwater Avenue and Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard when strong winds dislodged the material from a roof, according to the Scottsdale Fire Department.
Mateucci, who was rector of the Pontifical Catholic University of Paraná (PUCPR), died at the scene. Police said no foul play was suspected and described the death as a weather-related accident.
The Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation, which operates Taliesin West, said it was extending its condolences to Mateucci’s family and loved ones. The Scottsdale Police Department is aware of the incident.
PUCPR said in a statement that the rector had been struck by an acrylic object and died instantly, correcting earlier reports that his death had followed a car accident.
“The University asks for prayers for the eternal rest of Brother Rogerio and for the comfort of his family, friends, and the entire Marist and university community,” it said.
Mateucci had led the university since 2022 and was recently confirmed for a further term covering 2026 to 2029. The institution said he had focused on strengthening its identity and encouraging innovation in academic management, and was known for his openness to dialogue.
PUCPR cancelled classes on October 17 and 19, as well as administrative activities on October 19. A memorial Mass is due to be held at the Jesus Mestre University Chapel in Curitiba.
The Maricopa County Medical Examiner will determine the official cause of death.
