Southfield hosted a walk on October 11 to raise awareness of domestic violence, bringing together local officials, community organisations and residents at the city’s municipal campus in Michigan.
The event was organised by the Southfield Police and Fire Departments, the 46th District Court and community partners. Participants completed an approximately two-mile route beginning and ending at the Southfield Municipal Campus on Evergreen Road.
The walk formed part of efforts to highlight the impact of domestic abuse and the support available to victims and survivors. It opened with a press conference outlining Southfield’s strategy to address and reduce domestic violence in the community.
Registration and T-shirt collection began in the morning, with free shirts offered to pre-registered participants and to others while supplies lasted.
Organisations supporting the event included HAVEN of Oakland County, Henry Ford Health, Jewish Family Service of Metro Detroit, the Southfield Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and Family Assistance for Renaissance Men.
Southfield police advise anyone in immediate danger to call 911. Those wishing to report domestic violence or seek assistance can contact the department’s non-emergency line on 248-796-5500 or reach out to HAVEN.
