A swimmer is missing after a suspected shark attack at Sorrento Beach in Perth’s northern suburbs.
The man was reportedly swimming about 50 metres offshore at around 10.15am on Friday when he was attacked. He was with another man, who witnessed the incident.
The shark was described as being up to six metres long. Lifesavers rushed to the scene, but the swimmer has not been seen since.
A witness said there was blood in the water, while the man who had been swimming with the missing swimmer was consoled by rescuers after reaching the shore.
Three St John WA ambulances were sent to the beach before being stood down. The first emergency call was made at about the same time reports emerged of a large shark in the area.
Sorrento surf club activated its shark siren, which has continued to sound repeatedly. The beach remains closed as authorities scour the water, with emergency services including water police at the scene.
