Aston Villa are advancing in talks with Ian Maatsen over a new contract after Manchester United explored a possible move for the left-back, according to reports.
The 24-year-old Netherlands international is regarded as an important part of Unai Emery’s plans at Villa Park, with the club keen to underline his status and secure his long-term future.
Football Insider reports that discussions over improved terms are progressing, despite Maatsen already being contracted to Aston Villa until 2030. The club are understood to be determined to remove any uncertainty surrounding the defender after United’s interest during the summer transfer window.
Manchester United made an enquiry about Maatsen as they searched for another left-back, having failed to agree a deal for Newcastle United’s Lewis Hall. The approach came late in the window, with Newcastle also unwilling to part with Hall.
Transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano subsequently said Aston Villa considered Maatsen “untouchable” and had no intention of selling him this summer. The club’s position appears to have remained firm, with the proposed new contract intended to reflect the player’s growing importance.

Maatsen joined Villa from Chelsea in 2024 in a deal reported to be worth £37.5 million. He has since established himself as a regular in Emery’s squad and was part of the side that won the Europa League last season.
Football365 reports that Maatsen has made 91 appearances for Villa in all competitions, scoring three goals and providing four assists. His existing contract means Villa are under no immediate pressure to sell, but fresh terms would strengthen their hand should further interest emerge.
United continue to need competition at left-back, but their pursuit of Maatsen has ended without a deal. With Villa now working to extend his stay, the Dutchman looks set to remain at Villa Park and play a central role in Emery’s plans.
