The father of six-year-old Cole Adrien has spoken of his grief after his son was killed when a pickup truck drove across a football field at the Stryker Sports Complex in Wichita, Kansas.
Chris Adrian said the family was heartbroken by Cole’s death, telling the New York Times in a text message: “Cole was an incredible kid and could put a smile on anyone’s face.”
He added: “He was the joy and light of our community. His pure heart was open to everyone. He had the best laugh. He was a friend with everyone, young or old.”
The crash happened on Saturday as people gathered at the youth sports complex. Two people died and 10 others were injured after the pickup truck ploughed into a crowd.
The other person killed was 35-year-old Nicholas Schafer. A relative told the New York Times that Schafer’s family was not ready to speak to the media.
The driver was released and has not been charged with a crime. Wichita Police said she had been drug-tested and that officers were carrying out a mechanical examination of the pickup truck.
